We currently have an air to air heat pump. We would like to replace it with a propane furnance. If we do so will we have to replace the air conditioning unit as well? From what I understand, the air to air heat pump utilizes the air conditioning unit to run. Will our current air conditioning unit still work independently from the heat pump? What changes to the unit will need to be made, if any?

You can use your existing heat pump with the new gas furnace. To do it requires some controls but it is pretty easy. If you don’t want to use it for heat, then you can add a coil to the new gas furnace and use it like a regular air conditioner. For indepth info about this check out the heat pump and furnace pages at my source. Check out the hvac ratings page before you buy the new furnace.
YES your air condioner will work ,I had my heat pump side of unit turned off or bypassed and the air works fine
The easiest way to use your heat pump with a new gas furnace would to use a honeywell t8000 stat with an outdoor sensor. This allows the stat to control the gas furnace for back-up heat and emergency heat and gives you the option of a lock out temp. You will have to remove the evap coil from the air handler a install it in the new ductwork. The other controls that do this type of system are called fossil fuel kits. They cost more money and are harder to install (more wiring).
