Why do my heating and air conditioning units come on at the same time?

heating and air conditioning
Betsy asked:

I have central air. I turned my heater on for the first time yesterday and it seemed to work just fine. I felt the air coming from the vents and it is warm. The temperature reached the set temp on the thermostat. The problem is that my air conditioning unit also comes on. I don’t think this is normal. Can someone please tell me why this is happening? Thanks.

if its a combo unit it uses both to balance the temp,

Some systems have 2 thermostats and they work against each other when set at the same set point. turn the AC therm to 90 so it will not come on.
If you have just one thermostat, then you have a wiring problem or the unit had a poor engineer who didn’t get it before he came to work that day.

It may be a heat pump. An easy way to tell is to look at the thermostat. If it has an emergency setting, it is a heat pump. For more info, check out the heat pump page at my source.

Sounds like you have a “heat pump” to me. The unit outside runs when the furnace is running. Helps to use some of the outside heat to warm the house. I have one. I don’t like it and would never get a house that one again. The air coming from the vents never gets really warm. The unit runs forever to warm the house.
