How long does a household heating and air conditioning unit last?

We are just having some general maintenance issues with our 14 year old heat and air unit. Curious about their life expectancy
What maintenance is there besides keeping outdoor unit clean and changing filters??

   this has everything to do with how well it was installed and how well you do maintenance on it…the first unit i helped my father install in 1968 is still running to this day…
