I’m thinking of getting an outside heating and air conditioning package for my home. I was wondering how well they work and how energy efficient they are. Also where is a good place to buy a unit. I need a 2.5 or 3 ton unit. I might stay with propane heat since I have an existing propane furnace now. But I might go with all electric if it is cost efficient.

stick with propane, electric is almost always more expensive.
i have a masters license in heating and airconditioning
my best advice is get a central unit if you have a central heater now you already have duct work in place
it is a little more expensive but you will cool your house much easier saving money on your electric bill
i would stay with propane heat you will never be happy with elec heat or a heat pump if you are used to gas heat it is much warmer
with the price of propane now a days it is going to run about the same as elec.
your best place to get one is through a licensed dealer this way you know its put in and vented correctly
check with any local a/c wholesale distributer they would be more then happy to give you a list of local dealers or installers and they can offer more advice on what you need for your house if you tell me what city you live in i could probably send you a list of wholesalers in your area
outdoor package units are as good as split systems and they have the same requirements for energy savings as any other ac or heat pump…you can also get these that have propane heat with central air…all you would have to do is remove your furnace and run ducts from the package unit to the ductwork you already have…but if it was me I would just replace my existing furnace with a newer more efficent furnace and add central air to it….
I would stay away from a package unit if you already have a indoor furnace. the heat exchangers are much more prone to go out on a outside unit than on a indoor furnace. (very costly repair)
